Technologies implemented in this project:

Uses centrally treated domestic wastewater to meet its irrigation and cooling water demand, consistently supplying the greenhouse of recycled water, independent of natural water resources and climate. 
Linked to Australia’s largest wastewater reuse project.
Further water purification processes take place on-site, where advanced treatment methodologies are used to meet the high water quality standards that are required for hydroponic irrigation water.  
Combined heat and power generation (CHP) is used to supply electricity, heat and CO2-rich exhaust to the greenhouses.
A biomass boiler is used for base load heating during the winter season.

Project description

Perfection Fresh was the first semi-closed greenhouse with artificial lighting in Australia. Designed and built by Van der Hoeven, the project demonstrates how advanced greenhouse technology can support reliable, year round production while significantly reducing dependence on conventional water resources.

To secure a sustainable water supply, the greenhouse combines rainwater harvesting with recycled water sourced from the Virginia Irrigation Scheme, Australia's largest water recycling project. The recycled water undergoes advanced on site treatment to meet the high quality standards required for hydroponic cultivation. Together with the greenhouse's closed irrigation system, this creates a reliable and resource efficient water supply, independent of natural freshwater availability.

By integrating innovative water management, controlled climate technology and artificial lighting, Perfection Fresh has become a leading example of sustainable greenhouse production in Australia.
