Serres des Grands Lacs operates a high-tech ModulAIR semi-closed greenhouse in southwest France, producing premium tomatoes for the Rougeline cooperative. Located in a region where summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, the greenhouse was designed to provide a stable growing climate while maximizing resource efficiency. 

To remain competitive in a challenging climate, the grower invested in advanced greenhouse technology and a sustainable energy concept. Together with Van der Hoeven, a semi-closed greenhouse was developed that combines active cooling, controlled air handling and efficient energy management. 

A key feature of the project is its circular energy approach. The greenhouse is heated using residual energy from the municipal waste-to-energy plant in Pontenx-les-Forges, turning waste heat into a valuable resource for tomato production. Combined with the ModulAIR concept, this allows the grower to maintain optimal growing conditions while reducing energy consumption. 

The active pad cooling system keeps greenhouse temperatures significantly below outdoor temperatures during hot summer periods, while filtered air intake helps reduce pest pressure and improve crop health. Through close collaboration between the grower and Van der Hoeven, the project demonstrates how semi-closed greenhouse technology can deliver reliable yields, high-quality tomatoes and more efficient use of energy and natural resources.
